The Sweetest Birthday Wish

Late at night, I'm peering into my daughter's sleepy eyes.  I smooth her hair from her forehead, waiting patiently for her last pre-bedtime preparation to be finished.  She's almost asleep as we sit there, and I'm clinging to the last few minutes of my day with her.

"Hey Mia," I whisper, respectful of the night-time calm. "Did you know that I love you desperately and deeply and so, so much?"

Smiling, she nods her head and answers, "Happy Birthday, mama."

I kiss her brow, getting ready to thank her for helping me have a wonderful day.  But she speaks before I can form the words.

"Now can you wipe me, mama?" Holding her nose, she continues, "It stinks in here."  I dutifully perform my services, and she hops off the potty seat.

Somehow, despite the stinky circumstances, that post-potty affirmation is the sweetest birthday wish of my day.

And that's how I know I love motherhood.

  1. BWAHAHAHAHA! My mother tells me that she was afraid she would still be wiping my behind in college as I refused to do it myself when I was little. TMI?

  3. hahahaha! The truest story I think any mother has ever told. So simple and yet very complex.
I love your sense of humor and your heart, Sarah.
