7 Quick Takes Friday, #27

1. Please don't be mad at me for what I'm about to admit: I'm SKINNY.

It's true. All my life, I've wished, hoped, prayed for curves where none were forthcoming. Well, some curves eventually appeared - I do have scoliosis, but a curvature of the spine isn't what I'd been dreaming of when I imagined the body I'd most like to have. Anyway, my point here is that my weight isn't generally an issue, unless I'm bemoaning my prominent ribcage and knobby-knees. My body has definitely changed after having two kids, but what stubbornly remains is my gangly self.

Nevertheless, for some reason I had this conversation with my husband this week while trying to convince him to come home early from work:

Me: Pretty, pretty please?
Him: Sorry babe, I've just got to get this stuff done. I wish I could, really I do.
Me: Well can you at least come home before I turn into a pumpkin?
Him: (laughing) You ARE a pumpkin.
Me: YOU THINK I'M FAT!?!
Him: Wha?! NO! I just meant...you know...like a term of endearment? Haha. Like - hey pumpkin, what's for dinner? Oh, come on, you know that's not what I meant...I was just....*sigh*

Sometimes I like to keep him on his toes. Make sure his mind stays nimble.

2. I have a gardening question I'm hoping someone may know the answer to. Why do some of my tomatoes ripen before they're fully grown? Why are some of them turning bright red when they're only the size of a dime, while others grow to full size before ripening? Is there anything I'm doing wrong to cause this? Is it weather related? Or just the luck of the draw?

3. Last week I told you about how desperate I was for a haircut, and YES! I got one! I was asked to post a picture, and I decided that since I'm no good at exhibitionism, I put one on the iddy-bitty thumbnail in my 'About Me' section in the sidebar. So now my hair is short, hallelujah, and you get to see a tiny me posing for a self -portrait, hallelu-yikes.

4. I wrote a post on Wednesday that was pretty far outside of my normal silly stories. It was emotional and heartfelt and I debated even posting it for other people to read. I felt very bare and open by putting myself down in the written word - but it felt good too. Putting words to my emotions was helpful. I guess when I'm having these...feelings...they come pouring out of me and I have no way of knowing if others will understand a word of what I'm saying.

Kind of like now. I'm rambling on and on about nothing and hoping you understand.

Hello?

5. Mia hardly ever watches Sesame Street anymore, so I was surprised to see her soaking it all up the other day, particularly the Word of the Day segment. Jessica Alba was defining Scrumptious, and Mia was paying terribly close attention. I expected to hear her use this new word soon, and I wasn't disappointed.

At dinner she looked at me and said, "This dinner is delicious, mom! It's....it....uhhh....it's de-scrumptious!"

Her execution was slightly off, but at least the sentiment was correct.

6. I can't believe Lauren is big enough to try this:

7. I just finished re-reading The Time Traveler's Wife. I figured that since I'm hoping to go see the movie sometime soon, I'd better read it again to prepare myself. I read it several years ago (maybe 5?) and it's been collecting dust on my bookshelf because I wanted to give myself time to forget some of it. I loved it so much - and since you only get to read a book for the first time once, I tried to buck the system and get a second first time.

And I am SO glad I did. It was beautiful - again. Really an amazingly written story. I'd forgotten enough of the details to be captivated but remembered enough of the plot to not keep myself up all hours to see what happens next.

You should read it. Be warned, though, it takes some concentration, what with all the time traveling. And there is alot of, um, flowery language that some may take offense to. But really, truly, and seriously - you should read it. It still stands near the top of my favorite books list.

I'll be letting it collect dust for another 5 years or so in order to pave the way for my third first-time experience. And I'm excited already.

  1. First of all, I *loved* your post on Wednesday. Your blog is fresh and funny, but at the same time everything you write feels really meaningful. Yours is rapidly becoming my favorite 'I-don't-actually-know-these-people' family blog.

As for your hair, it looks great!

  3. Lauren is such a big girl! Kenna doesn't get that your girls grow when she is away. She just told me yesterday that she is probably bigger than Mia now because she's been growing every day. She was quite surprised to hear that Mia grows every day too!
And I'm glad you mentioned The Time Traveler's Wife. I've been meaning to get this, I just keep forgetting. I'm definitely making a trip to the store for it today. Of course a trip to Wal-mart for only one thing seems like a long shot!

  5. I loved your heartfelt post too. I get absolutely terrified posting anything beyond my normal comfort zone of hamming it up, but it feels good to get it out there. ...And more times than not, someone comments and let me know that they're thinking about the same things.

Once again, your hair looks mahhhhhvelous, dahling, and I am totally picking up The Time Traveler's Wife because I want to see the movie and I can't say no to a good book! Have a great weekend, Skinny Pumpkin! ;D

  6. Ditto on the haircut! I enjoyed your quick take last week about needing a haircut, but didn't say anything because it felt so "deja vu": I had been having exactly the same crisis last week about my hair. I am SO much happier now that it's cut. Why should HAIR make such a big difference anyway?

  7. Wednesday's post was "de-scrumptious" and well-written. I would love to read more like that! I'm so glad you visited my blog. I have enjoyed "meeting" you and your family.

I loved "The Time Traveler's Wife" too! Agreed, some of the language needs to be overlooked, but past that is a wonderful story. I could hardly put it down. I am looking forward to seeing the movie too.

  8. Oh, you are so right about The Time-Traveller's Wife! Wonderful story and it WILL be interesting to see if they capture all the emotion on film successfully.

I love your haircut and think your profile pic is A-DORABLE!

    #5 made me lol...very cute!

Finally, I loved your post from Wednesday. You had me crying. Such an eloquent expression of those catch-your-breath moments when you realize how fast time is passing. Thank you for sharing it with all of us :)

Also, thanks for stopping by my blog. Have a great weekend.

  10. OK, I've GOT to reply to these comments sooner...I wish I had a blog setup that allowed replies to individual comments. Maybe someday :)

Emily - Thank you! I find myself thinking the same thing about your blog :)

Megan - Definitely. It is well worth your time.

Cortney - Kenna is such a sweetie! Let me know when you read the book, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Chelsea - Story of my life: random smothered in random with a side of red cheeks.

Lenae - Ah, Skinny pumpkin. You've nicknamed me :)

Katie - Thank you! If only I had my brain working straight, you could've seen it in person the day of. Oh well. Play date soon?

Fencing Bear - I know! My whole outlook changes if my hair is feeling/looking good. Confidence tied to appearance. I hear that's not such a good idea, but how to avoid it? :)

Jenn - Mia would be proud that you utilized her fancy word in such a complimentary way to her mama :)

Leigh-Ann - You're so sweet! You said such nice things, I had a smile on my face for the rest of the evening :)

Really, ALL of you have put a smile on my face this evening. Wow, I must really be hormonal or something - first that post on Wed, and now? I LOVE YOU GUYS!!

  11. Your hair looks beautiful - very 1920s!
I USED to be skinny. USED to. And in my head, I still think of myself as a stick bug and then I catch sight of myself in a mirror and I'm shocked! Every time!

  12. It is fun when kids learn new, big words, especially when they get them a little twisted. When my oldest son was in kindergarten, he announced during the discussion on professions that his father was a photographer and his mother an eccentric. Now, I may well have been (and may still be) an eccentric, but I don't believe that by any stretch of the imagination one could consider that a profession!
